The Appalachian Ballet Company has been providing high-quality dance performances for the greater Knoxville area since 1972. BECK CULTURAL EXCHANGE CENTER

The Beck Center provides opportunities for cultural exchange with the preservation and exhibition of the achievements of African-Americans in Knoxville, Tennessee.

Beck Center was founded in 1975 and named for the late James and Ethel Beck, prominent members of the Knoxville community and founders of the Ethel Beck Home for Orphans, who bequeathed money to purchase its present site. Located just a few blocks from Downtown Knoxville, the Civic Coliseum and other historic sites, as well as its being within walking distance of the famed Alex Haley Statue at Haley Heritage Square, the Beck Center is a major tourist attraction for those visiting the Knoxville area. THE CARPETBAG THEATRE

The Carpetbag Theatre is a community based, non-profit, professional theatre company dedicated to the production of new works. CBT's Ensemble Company develops new scripts primarily through collaboration and improvisation. Founded in 1970, CBT is a corporation of writers, artists, dancers and musicians. It has had a notably good record of performances, workshops, and other activities, and is one of the few tenured African-American professional theatre companies in the South. CIRCLE MODERN DANCE

Circle Modern Dance was founded in the fall of 1990 to provide Knoxville audiences with an alternative to the current dance experiences available. The founders of Circle envisioned an atmosphere in which area choreographers and performance artists could display their artistic endeavors and recent works without being bound by the structures of a "dance company." COMMUNITY CRAFT CENTER - NORRIS

The Community Craft Center was founded in 1970 by Grace Foster and Sara Shepard Starr, working with the Anderson County Community Action Commission. The stated purpose was, "to enrich the souls and pocketbooks of low-income people in Anderson County." The original members assisted each other in teaching, producing, and selling hand crafts. They met in one room of a country store and eventually bought the entire store.

The non-profit charter for the Community Craft Center was recorded in Nashville in November, 1974. The not-for-profit charter for the Community Craft Co-Op was recorded in March, 1977. In addition to the Community Action Commission, early assistance was provided by Good Neighbors of Norris, The Tennessee Arts Commission and John Rice Irwin of the Museum of Appalachia. Weaving, quilting, and pottery departments were established to teach these skills on a regular, on-going basis. Looms, potters' wheels, a kiln, quilting frames, and other equipment were obtained. EAST TENNESSEE CONCERT BAND

The East Tennessee Concert Band is a professional, adult community organization which provides quality concert events to the East Tennessee area. The KCB was organized in 1991 with the purpose of providing a musical outlet for better musicians in the East Tennessee area. The band has members from Anderson, Blount, Campbell, Grainger, Knox, Meigs, Rhea, Roane, and Scott counties. The KCB is under the direction of Dr. Ric Best. EAST TENNESSEE HISTORICAL SOCIETY

 

The East Tennessee Historical Society preserves, interprets, and promotes the history of Tennessee, focusing on East Tennessee. Through educational programs and exhibits at the ETHS Museum in Knoxville we seek to introduce people to the fascinating and rich history of this region.

ETHS programming in the first quarter of 2002 covers topics ranging from the early days of the Tennessee frontier to the excitement of the 1982 World's Fair. Genealogy workshops will help you find your roots, while lectures and museum exhibits, will bring you face to face with East Tennessee's history and history makers.

In the core exhibit of the East Tennessee Historical Society Museum, you can take a trip through two centuries of East Tennessee's stories with the artifacts, documents, and sounds that shaped life in the Great Valley. The Eastern Tennessee Conservatory for the Arts is a non-profit organization dedicated to building awareness of the arts in east Tennessee. GREAT SMOKY ARTS AND CRAFTS COMMUNITY

The Arts & Crafts Community is comprised of the largest group of independent artisans in the country. IRISH MUSIC ASSOCIATION

We are the Michael Kennedy (local)Branch of international Comhaltas Ceoltóirí Éireann. We hold weekly public Irish music sessions and Irish language table every Thursday 7-9:30pm at Patrick Sullivan's in The Old City and monthly "kitchen sessions" at a members home to welcome new and beginning players. JUBILEE COMMUNITY ARTS

Jubilee Community Arts is dedicated to documenting, preserving and presenting the traditional performing arts of the Upland South. JCA produces a weekly concert series at the Laurel Theater, two weekly radio shows, an arts-in-the-schools program, a Gaelic festival in November, an Appalachian music festival in March, and an international festival in June.
